Delta Food Coalition
Delta Food Coalition (DFC) is a network of community groups working together to address food security issues in Delta. DFC leverages community resources and coordinates food security initiatives, sharing information on available programs and needs, identifying available resources, and making connections between agencies and resources. DFC functions as a food hub, sourcing fresh, local food and distributing it to people in need, while connecting individuals and families in need with the appropriate community food programs. The collaborative network helps create a more resilient food system and allowed us to work quickly to provide emergency food relief in response to Covid-19.
Food Security
Food security looks at problems of food waste and inequitable distribution, nutrition, health and obesity, and poverty. To achieve food security, every member of a community must be able to make food choices that sustain personal health and well being and where our current consumption does not reduce our ability to meet the needs of future generations. Building a sustainable regional food system is an important goal in achieving long term food security.
DFC brings together diverse interests to address these challenges from a broad perspective. By working together, Delta Food Coalition pools community resources to deliver action oriented projects that make a real difference for Delta residents. These include the Harvest Box Program, Shared Harvest, and the Victory Garden Program.
DFC membership is open to any individual or group interested in contributing to this initiative. Members include the City of Delta, Deltassist, Delta Boy’s and Girls Club, Tsawwassen First Nations, South Delta Food Bank, Northside Community Church, Nick’s Nooks, Reach and Fraser Health Authority. Earthwise Society coordinates the DFC. To learn more about DFC programs, to learn more, or to make a donation to support our initiatives, please email info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.
